Best P2P Ip Filtering Programs!

Why should you bother about protecting your privacy on the internet ?

The following information can be captured by web logs or scripts when Web surfing is unprotected:

  • IP Address – A unique identifier of an individual computer.
  • Network ownership & administration
  • Operating System & Browser – Reveals which security gaps can be most easily exploited.
  • Previously visited Web pages (History-Referers)
  • Form Contents [ eg; your passwords ]
  • Favorite Sites/Bookmarks lists
  • Traceroute – Can reveal information about geographical location.
  • Port Scan - Reveals data in transmission.
  • Drive Scan – Reveals the contents of the user’s hard drive, including software and files.

If you have a password stored in the clipboard for instance [ a simple copy & paste ] a website may be able to grab that from your computer if you don’t have that restricted in your browser.

Before we get into using Proxies etc, we should cover some general privacy information.

Every move you make on the internet can be tracked. Everything, including all your emails and anything you post on forums, blogs and websites. Starting with your own ISP, the servers you connect to or used to transmit/transfer your information.

Some things may come back to haunt you later down the track, and many people have had information they posted carelessly, used against them.

You could lose your job or miss out on getting it in the first place, or worse be accused of an internet crime even through someone else’s mistake and mis-identification.

In many cases innocent people have been jailed, tortured and most likely murdered with the help of search engines like google and yahoo freely providing personal information to countries where the govt is corrupt or under communist rule, and where speaking the truth is not permitted or just illegal. Money and power is often much more important than doing the right [ humanitarium ] thing and protecting people’s privacy rights or freedoms.

It might be best to avoid peers under the control of organizations who frown upon media sharing, or peers located in government and educational institutions. Never fear, Phoenix Labs has a solution for your woes: Peer Guardian 2 http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/ The people behind Peer Guardian maintain block lists that can block government, educational, and malware institutions as well as known bad peers connected with anti-P2P organizations. It will protect you from inadvertently connecting to malicious ad servers, giving you a better handle on your security.

Another Ip filtering program called Protowall from Biss forums is a light weight NDIS IP filterĀ  designed to run independently along side a personal firewall for the sole purpose of blocking large amounts of IP addresses.

Hushmail vs Carnivore

Hushmail’s security cannot be broken or weakened by this government sponsored snooping software. Hush’s security system is a lot like a circuit, when one Hush user communicates with another Hush user, the circuit is complete and the mail they send is completely safe. To anyone other than the sender or the recipient of a Hush message, email appears as a jumble of numbers and letters. It is completely illegible. The only way to decrypt or unscramble Hush messages is by using your passphrase when you open up your Hushmail account. Carnivore cannot decrypt your mail, and is therefore, powerless against messages sent between Hush users.

What is Carnivore:

Carnivore is information-gathering software created by the FBI to combat criminals who utilize the Internet. Carnivore is housed in a computer that connects to your Internet Service Provider’s (ISP’s) servers and mines all incoming and outgoing mail for information.

The FBI intends to use the software to locate and monitor specific email addresses for evidence of criminal activity. In the process of monitoring any account, Carnivore must sift through all available account information on a given server.

The objection many privacy advocates, legislators, and the general public have with Carnivore is that the net it casts is too wide. The FBI would have the ability to look through the accounts and email of people not suspected or charged with any crime. Further, the public would have no protection or knowledge of unlawful or accidental seizures of account information. Basically, you have to trust the FBI not to invade your privacy.
